Mazda2 makes world premiere at Bangkok

Following its online reveal last week, Mazda has finally taken the wraps off the sedan version of the new Mazda2 featuring its up-to-date SkyActiv technology and a new 1,500cc “clean diesel” engine. Yes, diesel!

Thailand is the first country in the world to witness the launch of the all-new Mazda2 sedan at the International Motor Expo and Thailand will also become the first country outside Japan to start the local production of Mazda vehicles —including transmission, engine and vehicle assembly.

As mentioned earlier, the new Mazda2 will be powered by a SkyActiv-D 1.5-litre diesel developing 105hp and a maximum torque of 220Nm. The engine benefits from an i-stop function and i-ELOOP technology capable of using electricity from regenerative braking to power the air conditioning system as well as other assemblies inside.

The all-new Mazda2 comes with premium features such as MZD Connect next-generation car connectivity system, Active Driving Display, Touch Screen Center Display and Center Commander. Fuel economy is minimized, thanks to an engine i-stop function and i-ELOOP that uses electricity from regenerative braking to power the air-conditioner and other equipment in the cabin. There are also dual airbags, Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) and ABS brakes fitted as standard.

According to the Japanese automaker, Mazda2 is the first car model to be officially approved for the Phase II of the Thailand Eco Car program. To be eligible, the fuel economy requirements has to be 4.3 litres per 100km (23.2km/litre) or better, while carbon dioxide emissions must not be above 100g/km.

The all-new Mazda2 SKYACTIV is scheduled to go on sale in Thailand early 2015, with retail prices will be announced prior to its debut. The Mazda 2 will probably arrive in Malaysia sometime next year, and may be priced at below RM90k! Stay tuned!
