Welcome back, Jeep. It has been more than 10 years since their departure from Malaysia. And now, they’re back, with 4 models and 6 variants for us Malaysians to choose from. Edaran Otomobil Nasional will be handling Jeep’s distribution in Malaysia, according to DRB-Hicom.
Jeep will be offering 4 models locally, ranging from the entry level Jeep Compass, Jeep Wrangler, Jeep Cherokee and the Jeep Grand Cherokee. All models are fully CBU from the United States, albeit from different plants.
The cheapest offering is the Jeep Compass. Our Malaysian variant will be the Limited variant (not limited edition), and will retail for RM248,889 (OTR without insurance). Under the hood lies a 2.4 L engine with Dual-VVT, good for 170 horses at 6,000 rpm and a total of 220 Nm of torque at 4,500 rpm. For the city dwellers, good news for you as the Jeep Compass only comes with a 6 speed automatic transmission.
Moving one level up is the most recognizable Jeep, the Wrangler. For the Wrangler, it’ll come in 3 variants, namely Rubicon, Unlimited Sport and Unlimited Sahara. Powering all Wrangler variants is the 3.6 L Pentastar V6 engine. The Pentastar V6 is capable of producing 284 horsepower at 6,350 rpm and a total of 347 Nm at 4,300 rpm of torque to all four wheels. As for variant differences, the Unlimited Sport is the cheapest Wrangler variant, retailing at RM288,889 (OTW without insurance). The only gearbox option is a 5-speed automatic.
The Unlimited Sport variant will have a fabric interior, material coloured fenders (black!) and 16-inch slot-spoke steel painted wheels. Slotted above the Unlimited Sport is the Unlimited Sahara. The Unlimited Sahara gets leather interior, body coloured side fenders and 18-inch wheels and retails for RM328,889. Lastly, the Wrangle Rubicon. This 3 door variant will set you back for RM338,889 and gets you pretty much the same kit as the Unlimited Sahara, but rides on a set of 17-inch polished aluminum gray wheels instead. The Wrangler Rubicon also features a unique “Rubicon” embroidered seating. Except the Unlimited Sport (only 2), both the Unlimited Sahara and Rubicon gets four airbags. Other safety features like ABS, EBD and Electronic Roll Mitigation (ERM).
Another iconic Jeep is the Cherokee. The new Cherokee may be an acquired taste, with the rather unique front end. Available in Trailhawk and Longitude variants, the Cherokee is powered by a 2.4 L engine called Tigershark Multiair (probably the coolest name for an engine!), which produces some 174 horsepower at 6,400 rpm and 229 Nm of torque at 3,900 rpm. Power from the Tigershark Multiair goes through a 9 (!) speed automatic gearbox to all four wheels. Setting the Trailhawk and Longitude variants apart is the rim sizes (Trailhawk 18-inches ; Longitude 17-inches), Jeep Active Drive Lock on the Trailhawk, Selec-Speed Control and the unique Trailhawk suspension set up. The Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk is yours for RM378,889 while the Limited is yours for RM348,889. Both prices are exclusive of insurance.
Lastly there’s the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Retailing at RM468,889, it is the most expensive Jeep model in Malaysia. The Jeep Grand Cherokee is powered by a 3.6 L Pentastar V6 engine which produces 284 horsepower at 6,350 rpm and a total of 347 Nm of torque at 4,300 rpm. Available transmission is an 8-speed automatic. The Grand Cherokee will be available in both Overland and Limited variants, with the Limited variant trimming some RM20,000 off the price of the Overland (RM448,889). The pricier Overland model adds a set of 20-inch Polished Aluminum wheels (18-inch on the Limited), Quadra-Lift Air Suspension System (normal duty on the Limited), wood and leather wrapped multi-function steering wheel and courtesy lights on the side mirrors.
All Jeep vehicles will come with a 5-year or 150,000 km warranty (whichever comes first).
