We don’t blame you if you’re not a fan of the Toyota Camry. Being a D-segment sedan, the Camry’s sole purpose in life is to ferry passengers in utmost comfort and reliability. Out goes stuff like performance, handling and straight line speed. Until now, that is.
Recently unveiled at Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) 2014 by none other than Top Gear USA host, Rutledge Wood, this 2015 Toyota Camry looks pretty much stock standard from the outside, apart from its unusually dark tinting. But under that stock looking body lurks a Toyota 5.7L 3UR-FE from the USDM Toyota Tundra, which is supercharged and force fed with nitrous to set drag-strips on fire. Total horsepower is rated at 850, which is mind blowing, considering how stock the car looks.
Apart from the engine, the transmission and rear axle are also donated from the Toyota Tundra. The chassis however, is a tube-frame design, much like how other drag cars are. Also, the rear tires, despite looking stock, are actually a whopping 335-section-width full slicks.
Looks aside, the Camry ‘funny-car’ is said to be capable of running the quarter mile in 9.8 seconds. Pretty darn fast for a Camry, right? The Camry will be making rounds around the States, taking part in various NHRA drag events.
