In this line of work where it’s always cars and bikes day in and day out, sales figures and market stats the next, it really warms the cockles of our collective hearts here at AF when we hear about something that a car company is doing apart from just selling cars, and we recently got news of a good one.

As part of UMW Toyota’s continuing CSR programme, recently over 20 volunteers from UMW Toyota Motor played host to 30 children from Agathians Shelter, Petaling Jaya during a special shopping treat at Sunway Pyramid. This annual festive celebration season was organised as part of the company’s commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility and also to inculcate a spirit of volunteerism and community service among the UMW Toyota Motor personnel.

The Deepavali treats began with a festive shopping accompanied by UMW Toyota Motor’s volunteers to have a bonding relationship with the children and foster the spirit of giving and sharing. The children aged between 6 to 16 years old, enjoyed a full dinner spread, exciting entertainment by a magician clown and were presented with “Deepavali angpows. This outreach programme was intended to assure these children that they have friends who care and are not alone.

“Our main purpose is to give hope and motivate these children to become the best that they can be. Even though they come from underprivileged backgrounds, we hope to inspire them with our love and care, so that they can also have the same hopes and dreams that every child should have,” says Datuk Ismet Suki, President of UMW Toyota Motor.

Datuk Ismet Suki, adds that the experience help many volunteers including himself to realise how fortunate they are to have loving and complete families. “While most families are celebrating however, it is just another ordinary day for children in welfare homes. This is why we make a special effort to spread a little cheer to charity homes by treating them during this festive season. We hope to become a part of the ‘family’ that they never had.”

The company has been practising the sharing of festive joy with welfare homes since 2002 as part of their community outreach programmes. These programmes underline UMW Toyota Motor’s initiatives to share their global direction of being a caring corporate citizen that gives back to society through philanthropic and social outreach activities. The company also involved in public awareness programmes on traffic safety and environmental conservation in its other CSR campaigns.

Present at the festive gathering was En. Mohd Shamsor Mohd Zain, Director of Marketing Division. The Agathians Shelter, Petaling Jaya welcomes any donation to help the children, do contact Mr. Sivabalan at 03-7954 1680 for more details.
