Earlier AF reported that the Road Transport Department (JPJ) announced an operation to crack down on the usage of both strobe lights and illegal number plates to commence soon. Just a few days ago, JPJ released new regulations and guidelines for number plates and window tint, and at the same time announced a crackdown to put an end to strobe lights and retrofit / aftermarket High-intensity discharge (HID) headlights.
While JPJ has given a 6-months extension on window tint, JPJ together with the police (PDRM) and Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) will begin operations to hunt down the illegal usage of number plates, strobe lights and retrofit HID lights by 1st of November 2014. We won’t delve much into the window tint regulations as all the relevant information can be found here, furthermore enforcement has been postponed for another 6 months till May 1st 2015.
To recap, the usage of both strobe lights and retrofit HID lights are now deemed as illegal. According to JPJ, these accessories will pose a risk to motorists, as such high-intensive flashes may blind road users. The ban on retrofit HIDs will see a bigger impact towards Malaysian motorists as these plug-and-play devices are a common aftermarket favourite as seen on some of our cars here.
Meanwhile, here are the guidelines of the number plates as below, and nothing was mentioned on the number plate holders as what we discussed previously.
This is the list of compound for those who were caught with the aforementioned items we discussed:
If you have seen any JPJ roadblock lately, don’t worry as these officers are on the road to educate road users on their latest guidelines and enforcement, giving time for road users to comply with these guidelines. Despite that, JPJ will begin fining offenders by next month (November 2014).
In the end, prevention is better than cure; hence we would advise readers to get rid of both retrofit HID lights and strobe lights from your vehicles. At the same time, please ensure your number plates adhere to the regulations we shared here.
