No decision on Mitsubishi Lancer replacement…for now

Lancer GTE

Bad news for fans of the Mitsubishi Lancer saloon car, as not only has the iconic “Evolution” gone to Mitsubishi’s future crossover, but we won’t get one, until 2017, if its approved.

Mitsubishi Motor’s president Osamu Masuko told an Australian motoring site that a successor will not arrive until 2017 or 2018. Masuko said that the company’s refusal to introduce a replacement for the ageing Lancer model was proven as seen in motorshows lately, where the company continues to spearhead its efforts in electric-hybrids, SUVs and pick-ups.

Interestingly, even if Mitsubishi gives the green light for the new Lancer, it will be based on a shared platform from Nissan and its alliance partner Renault, something Masuko confirmed.

The Lancer made its debut in 1973 with the current generation introduced in 2007, which means the “shark-faced” Lancer has been around for seven years. The current generation Lancer was also introduced as the Proton Inspira in Malaysia. As for now, Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia is currently offering the Lancer GTE model at RM 115,590.20, competing against the tough and crowded C-segment passenger car segment.
