Over the weekend JPJ released a press statement in response to the whole area regarding the banning of Uber services here in Malaysia. JPJ notes that Uber’s service has had a good reaction from the public but they also stated that the laws and rules are in place for the betterment of all.
They highlighted that under SPAD (Suruhanjaya Pengankutan Awam Darat), a public transport permit is required in order to understand the background of the service provider and under JPJ, a vocational license (public transportation license) is needed to ensure that the drivers are indeed competent to drive a public transport vehicle. They also noted that the said vehicle needs to be registered as a public transport vehicle as well.
JPJ then ends the statement with the notion that they are willing to work with Uber but have yet to receive any forms of communications, applications or even intentions for a meet up. They have provided the full contact details for Uber to contact them.
So far the press statement was only released on their Facebook Page and not on the official website at the time of writing.
Also do note that not all of Uber services are deemed illegal, for example, Uber Black uses the services of an already existing car rental and limousine service who have the necessary permits and public vehicle licenses.
