Lexus LFA successor being planned, but don’t hold your breath…

The Lexus LFA supercar had a great run, with 500 units snapped during its two-year production run that ended in 2012. An article from Bloomberg revealed the successor for the 552bhp LFA is being planned and has President Akio Toyoda’s backing.

“Akio believes that every generation deserves to have a car like an LFA, so we’re building an LFA for the generation we have today,” said Executive Vice President, Mark Templin said in Kyushu, Japan. He adds that at some point, there may be another special car for another generation.

However, word from the company’s spokesperson, Bryan Lyons, revealed that a second LFA isn’t imminent, and another generation could be about 30 years in the future. No, that’s not a typo. If this is true, it could make sense judging from the long and troubled development history of the LFA.

Development on the LFA began in 2000, but it took a decade before the first unit rolled-out from the factory. The car underwent substantial development changes such as changing from an aluminium frame to a carbon fibre tub. Although the car was unprofitable and priced much higher than its rivals, the LFA was meant to showcase Lexus’ engineering capabilities, moreover to its carbon fiber mass-production.

Also, the LFA has now effectively joined the ranks of the Toyota 2000GT – highly desirable limited edition cars that symbolise the advancement and progress of the Japanese automotive industry.

Until then, one may wonder what sort of engineering marvels the next generation LFA could offer, something that can be answered decades from now. Anyway, look forward for the next fast car from Lexus, the LF-LC (picture as below), in the near future.
