Whilst travelling in Sweden, a couple of close friends told me about this world’s largest American classic car gathering located in a small town called Västerås. It’s held each year during the summer and luckily, I just happened to be in the area to witness the event.
The Power Big Meet is a huge open air event that was established in 1978 and every year, this event has gathered more than 25 thousand classic cars in an open air field. The moment you enter the town of Västerås, you will already spot a number of classic Mustangs, Bonnevilles and Dogdes cruising down the street. It was amazing really, having the opportunity to see a fleet of classic cars of this magnitude because I’ve never seen so many classics in my whole life in just one day in one place! There are many types of American classics on display from custom cars, 50’s cruisers, 60’s muscle cars, especially Corvettes, Mustangs, to Camaros, and people from all over the world fly their vehicles to Sweden just to attend this Power Big Meet. Most of these cars look like they are well preserved, restored, nicely painted and you can spot so many colourful classics even in a light pink exterior!
The cruising normally takes place on Thursday, Friday and Saturday night while Saturday is usually overcrowded. Sweden has a very strict rule that only 100 per cent sober drivers are allowed to join the cruise so it kinda makes sense why I noticed a quite a number of girls who sat behind the wheel while the guys sit in the passenger seat and slug down beers.
Along the way, you can see people setting up tents and drinking whilst waiting for the parade of classic cars to pass by. There are also camp sites for those who drive with a caravan or campervan for the three day event at a very minimum fee.
However, I was really disappointed with the poor weather (11 degree celcius, mind you!) plus the rain made my visit a very quick and short trip. Whilst standing on the other side of the road, I managed to capture a couple of pictures before I decided to leave because my fingers were frozen to the point of being completely numb! Well, at least I’ve got something to share with you guys who haven’t been there before!
Oh well, maybe next year I’ll come back again. In the meantime, check out my picture gallery below!
