Elon Musk, renowned technopreneur and founder of Tesla Motors, has announced that he is opening up patents of Tesla’s electric car technologies to other manufacturers and companies. While patents were used to protect unique technologies or designs from copied by competitors, that’s not the case for what he envision on electric cars.
Musk stated that “Tesla will not initiate patent lawsuits against anyone who, in good faith, wants to use our technology, and has opened the floodgates for more electric cars to get on the road.”
He did add that Tesla’s main competitors aren’t the electric cars from rival manufacturers, but the traditional internal combustion engine. So in the name of open source, Tesla Motors think that by releasing all their electric car patents to everyone will accelerate the development of electric cars, with hopes of better electric cars being engineered and manufactured, in the name of a better and cleaner environment.
Musk’s selfless act could make him the world’s most iconic and exciting technopreneur who’s ever lived. With the company’s Model S (pic above) doing relatively well in the United States, he has a chance to prove electric cars can be accessible to everyone as how Henry Ford made cars accessible to the masses. That’s history in the making and there’s hope that these patents will allow electric cars from Proton and Perodua to be a reality in the near future.
