BMW has recently unveiled the second-generation X6 Sports Activity Coupe that comes with an even more extroverted design. The X6, which has already posted global sales of almost 250,000 units, enjoys a special status among BMW X model rivals thanks to its “irresistible allure, intoxicating performance attributes and innovative luxury”, well according to BMW anyway.
The new BMW X6 additionally comes with a suitably exclusive roster of standard equipment such as bi-xenon headlights, 19-inch light-alloy wheels, automatic tailgate operation and the 8-speed Steptronic sport transmission with steering wheel shift paddle, leather trim, two-zone climate control, auto-dimming rear-view mirror and the Driving Assistant safety package from BMW ConnectedDrive. Lending functionality an extra boost are the 40 : 20 : 40 split/folding rear seat backrests, which allow load compartment capacity to expand from 580 litres to as much as 1,525 litres (75 litres more than the predecessor).
There will also be an M Sport variant that is distinguished by an aerodynamic body kit, a matte aluminium grille and 19-inch lightweight alloy wheels. The model will also have an upgraded interior, an Adaptive M suspension and a self-leveling rear air suspension.
At launch, the X6 will be available with three different variants; the X6 sDrive35i and X6 xDrive35i will be powered by BMW’s 3.0-litre TwinPower Turbo inline-6 engine that develops maximum output of 300hp at 5,800 rpm, with peak torque of 406Nm available all the way from 1,200–5,000 rpm. It features a single, mid-sized turbocharger with a “twin-scroll” housing to boost performance and minimize response lag. Using Valvetronic for the first time on a turbocharged inline-6 allows the engine to “inhale” air more efficiently for combustion with virtually no delay and with reduced pumping losses. The X6 sDrive35i and X6 xDrive35i will accelerate from 0 – 100 km/h in six seconds flat. That is 0.3 seconds quicker than the previous generation X6 xDrive35i.
The 4.4-litre V-8 engine (N63) that powers the outgoing X6 xDrive50i receives an upgrade for its successor. The unique “reverse-flow” engine, whose two turbochargers are positioned in the V-area between the cylinder banks is well known for producing an instantaneous and sustained wave of power, making it a delight for the enthusiast driver. This new version of the engine adds BMW’s Valvetronic variable valve timing to the list of specifications. As a result, the new version of the engine (N63TÜ) develops a maximum 445hp between 5,500 and 6,000 rpm (a 45 hp increase), and makes peak torque of 650Nm between 2,000 and 4,500 rpm (a 40Nm increase). This newest TwinPower Turbo V8 powers the new X6 xDrive50i from 0-100 km/h in just 4.8 seconds, 0.4 seconds quicker than its predecessor.
All models in the new BMW X6 lineup feature a standard 8-speed Steptronic sport automatic transmission, whose high internal efficiency, precision and short shift times help to improve both efficiency and responsiveness. The transmission offers a “launch control” function, a high-precision traction control system which allows engine power to be translated as efficiently as possible into road speed when accelerating from a standstill.
