Do you think driving at the speed limit of 60km/h on our urban roads is a chore? Think again as the newly elected mayor of Paris is looking at the possibility of introducing a new mobility plan that would see the speed limit of almost all city’s streets reduced to a very pedestrian 30km/h.
Mayor Anne Hidalgo suggested that driving below 30 km/h across the Parisian road network would increase safety for drivers and pedestrians and reduce vehicle emissions and air pollution. Under this ingenious plan to save the planet and ensure more safely, the 30km/h limit would apply to all roads, with the exception of a small number of major roads into the city. As for now, one third of Paris’ road network is limited to 30km/h while the majority has a 50km/h cap.
This could effectively mean Paris will turn into the slowest city in the world in terms of the average speed permitted for drivers. However, putting a standardised speed limit in Paris is meant to reduce confusion for drivers, improving clarity for drivers by removing constant speed zone changes. So the next time you’re driving in the “City of Lights”, apart from admiring the Eiffel Tower, do remember to slow down.
