With Ferrari returning to turbocharging via the new California T, the Italian marque is looking to introduce twin-turbocharging for the 458 Italia facelift, marking the second modern Ferrari to embrace forced induction.
The updated 458 will receive the similar 3.9-litre V8 twin-turbo engine as the California T. This engine is capable of producing 560bhp with maximum torque of 755Nm, which is more or less with 458’s existing 4.5-litre V8. Maranello does not allow the 458 to receive similar engine performance with the entry level California T, so expect the facelifted 458 to be boosted up to 670bhp. Advanced tech from the LaFerrari could be included into the facelifted 458 as well.
No confirmed name was given, but Maranello insiders predicted it will be named as the “458M” although “458T” could be possible, judging from the latest California. The 458 has been in production since 2010 hence a facelift, with this new power unit in 2015.
It seems that almost all Italian supercar manufacturer are joining the “turbocharging” bandwagon, leaving the “former tractor manufacturer” to soldier on with naturally aspired screaming V10s and V12s. So when will Lambo grab the ‘bull’ by the horns and go down that similar road? We’ll keep you updated!
