Mazda has pulled the covers off the much-anticipated MX-5 RF (retractable fastback) during the eve of the 2016 New York International Auto Show. Now, this certainly adds to the appeal of the already-chic Mazda MX-5.
The power roof of the Mazda MX-5 RF can be opened or closed at speeds of up to 10 km/h with the press of a button, and the roof is stowed behind the seats. The retractable rear window also gets stored behind the seats. Despite its fastback styling and hardtop roof, the MX-5 RF offers the same amount of trunk space as the soft-top model at 130 litres.
Roof up, the Mazda MX-5 RF features a very coupe-like design, which suits the little car’s design very well. The sloping rear roofline certainly adds to the overall enhancement of the MX-5. We do dig the rear view of this RF version.
The new Mazda MX-5 RF will be available with either a SkyActiv-G 1.5 or a SkyActiv-G 2.0, both of which are four-cylinder petrol engines. Transmission choices include a six-speed automatic or a six-speed manual, with the former offering steering-mounted paddle shifters. The rest of the mechanic bits are identical to the soft-top sibling.
The sides of the roof and rear roof are color matched to the body color. The top of the roof is available in either piano black or the body color. The MX5 RF also receives a new shade of gray, called Machine Gray.
