Ever since the first generation Mazda MX-5 (known as the Miata in the US) made its international debut at the Chicago Motor Show in 1989, many didn’t expect that the little unpretentious Japanese roadster would become one of the most iconic sports cars in the world. Two and the half decades later and after three generations, the MX-5 is set to celebrate its 25th anniversary, with the debut of the next generation MX-5 at the New York motor show in April.
At the 2014 New York motor show, Mazda is set to showcase 15 of its favourite MX-5 vehicles, ranging from auto show concepts to race cars and production models. The next generation MX-5 is based on the platform shared with Alfa Romeo, with 40% parts shared between Alfa’s new Spider and the MX-5. No details on the new MX-5’s technical aspects are available yet, but the new roadster could be powered by a 1.5L SkyActiv engine.
The MX-5 Miata is the quintessential Mazda,” said Jim O’Sullivan, president and CEO of Mazda North America. “And after 25 years, every vehicle in the lineup continues to feature some characteristic of MX-5: a fluid shifter, lightness on its feet, quickness around a corner, a fun-to-drive DNA. With all the whiz-bang technology and comfort amenities increasingly added to modern vehicles, MX-5’s direct connection between car and driver still remains the standard feature that puts smiles on drivers’ faces.”
The new MX-5 is expected to hit the streets by 2016.
