Tragedy struck twice at the Sepang International Circuit last weekend during the motorcycle races of the Malaysian Super Series (MSS) when two riders lost their lives in two separate race incidents.
The first race incident took place on Friday during the practice round of the Super Stock B category when MSS rookie, Amaludin Abd Rahman, 42, lost control of his machine at Turn 15 and crashed into the tyre barrier. The track marshals managed to bring him to Putrajaya Hospital, but unfortunately, Amaludin succumbed to his injuries.
In another incident on Sunday during the start of the Superbike Championship’s Race 2, two riders collided into each other during the opening stages of the race. While 42-year-old Leonardo Sacchetto suffered a broken leg, the other rider from Singapore, Milton Poh, wasn’t that lucky as he succumbed to serious head injuries sustained from hitting the pit wall. Both riders were sent to the Putrajaya Hospital by the track marshals. The race was subsequently cancelled.
This marks the fourth and fifth time a fatality has been recorded at this track. Last year Malaysian rider, Muhammad Izzat Mohd Abdul Hakim, 17, and another race marshal were killed during a freak accident during an MSS practice session. In 2011, the world was shocked by the tragic demise of promising MotoGP rider, Marco Simoncelli, marking the first fatality recorded at the Sepang Int Circuit.
Our condolences to the family and friends of the departed.
