Following the horrid start for the Scuderia Ferrari in this year’s Formula One season, Stefano Domenicali has announced he is stepping down as Ferrari team principal. He will be replaced by Marco Mattiacci, the President and CEO of the marque’s North American arm, for an interim period of time.
“I take responsibility, as I have always done, for our situation,” said Domenicali. “This decision has been taken with the aim of doing something to shake things up and for the good of this group that I feel very close to.”
Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo, paid tribute to the departing team principal: “I thank Stefano Domenicali, not only for his constant dedication and effort, but also for the great sense of responsibility he has shown, even today, in always putting the interests of Ferrari above all else.”
Domenicali took over as team principal succeeding current FIA president, Jean Todt in 2008. He was the team’s administration and human resources personnel prior becoming the sporting director. The team did not win any titles after clinching the constructor’s title in 2008. Ferrari woes in F1 continued as during the recent Bahrain Grand Prix, drivers Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen finished ninth and tenth.
