JPJ Rolls Out New Driving Licence with Upgraded Security — But There’s a Catch

If you’re planning to renew your Malaysian driving licence anytime soon, don’t expect to walk away with a shiny new card—unless you’re heading overseas. The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has just introduced a brand-new design for the Malaysian Driving Licence (LLM), featuring enhanced security features and a refreshed look, but the rollout is happening in stages and only select groups are getting the physical version for now.

According to JPJ director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli, the physical version of the updated card is currently only being printed for two groups: Malaysians who are travelling abroad and non-citizens renewing their licences. Everyone else? You’ll be sticking with the digital version through the MyJPJ app for now.

He also added that Malaysians who are heading overseas can still request for a physical card since not all countries accept digitalised licenses, like Singapore. “Travellers need to carry a physical licence along with an International Driving Permit (IDP), which can be applied for at JPJ. Every country has different regulations”, he said.

The new LLM card isn’t just a visual upgrade. It’s built to last up to 10 years and is designed with anti-tampering and anti-forgery features, making it more secure than ever before. Visually, the front of the card now features the iconic Sultan Abdul Samad building, set against a backdrop of abstract wave designs. Flip it over, and you’ll see the Istana Negara with elegant floral motifs.

The full rollout will happen progressively across selected JPJ offices, giving the department time to ensure a smooth transition. So, if you’re renewing your licence locally, don’t be surprised when it’s delivered straight to your phone instead of your wallet.
