BMW’s Birthday Beast: M340i Edition 50 Jahre

The BMW 3 Series isn’t just another car on the road — it’s a rolling piece of motoring heritage. Since its debut in the 1970s, it’s been the go-to choice for driving enthusiasts and everyday thrill-seekers alike.

In Malaysia, the 3 Series holds a special place on the automotive scene. This year, the icon turns 50, and BMW Group Malaysia is marking the milestone with something properly special: the BMW M340i xDrive Edition 50 Jahre.

Only 50 lucky owners will get their hands on this commemorative ride, and the only way to get it is through BMW’s online store. That’s right — this one’s an online-exclusive, and it’s as limited as they come.

Built on the refreshed G20-generation 3 Series that received its facelift (or “Life Cycle Impulse” in BMW language) in 2023, the Edition 50 Jahre is more than just a pretty face. Sure, it’s still got the M340i’s punch, but this version cranks up the attitude with a sharper aesthetic and celebratory detailing that reminds you it’s something special.

From the outside, you’ll notice it’s not your regular M340i. M Performance side skirts give it a more aggressive stance, while a subtle ‘Edition 50 Jahre’ decal on the B-pillar adds a discreet nod to its exclusivity — each car comes numbered, a little bragging right for every owner. Red-painted brake calipers peek out from behind exclusive 19-inch M alloy wheels, and the look is topped off with a sporty boot-lid spoiler that subtly whispers “collector’s item.”

Step inside and the tribute continues. The centre console proudly displays the ‘Edition 50 Jahre’ plaque by the cupholders, a reminder of the 3 Series’ golden jubilee. You’ll also find carbon fibre paddle shifters that scream performance, and the centre armrest wrapped in BMW’s signature M tri-colour design for that perfect touch of flair.

Beyond these anniversary cues, it’s business as usual — which, when you’re in an M340i, means cutting-edge tech and top-tier comfort. The facelift brought in BMW’s new curved dual-screen setup, featuring a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster paired with a massive 14.9-inch touchscreen running the latest BMW Operating System 8.5. The cabin experience is further elevated with a 464-watt Harman Kardon surround sound system with 16 speakers that’ll keep any drive feeling like a private concert.

You also get all the modern conveniences and safety kit you’d expect from a performance saloon of this calibre, including the Driving Assistant package. That means Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go, Parking Assistant Plus, and a whole suite of advanced driver aids to make life on the road easier, safer, and way cooler.

Mechanically, there’s no change — and that’s good news. Under the bonnet is the much-loved B58 3.0-litre inline-six twin-turbo engine, paired with BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system. This powertrain combo has rightfully earned the M340i the nickname “M3 lite,” serving up 387 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque. It sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.4 seconds and pushes on to a limited top speed of 250 km/h — not bad for a birthday celebration.

As for colours, the Edition 50 Jahre is available in four slick exterior finishes: Alpine White, Arctic Race Blue, M Brooklyn Grey, and Black Sapphire. No matter which you choose, each comes matched with a stylish interior in Sensatec Perforated upholstery in Black and Tacora Red — the only combo available, and frankly, the only one you’d want.

Price-wise, you’re looking at RM396,800, which is a modest RM13,000 bump over the standard M340i xDrive Pro. Opt for the full works with BMW’s Service & Repair Inclusive (BS & RI) package and the price climbs to RM423,300.

So, there you have it. Half a century of the BMW 3 Series, celebrated in true Bavarian style. The M340i xDrive Edition 50 Jahre isn’t just a car — it’s a limited-edition slice of driving history. Only 50 units, one nation, and an icon reborn. Don’t blink, or you might miss it.
