Does anyone remember A1GP? The A1GP was a single-seater race series where countries were represented for the “pride of their nations” that was sadly short-lived. Well, after the last A1 race in 2009, it seems the nation-based racing series is set to make a return via the new A1GP-inspired Formula Acceleration 1 (FA1) series.
As for now, FA1 series is off to a good start as the series has attracted a few top talents from European single-seater drivers, ranging from GP2 race winner Tom Dillmann, European Formula 3 runner-up Felix Rosenqvist and Formula Renault 3.5 podium regular Nigel Melker. They tested FA1’s ex-A1GP Lola-Zyteks at Valencia last week.
The country-based team is set to follow suit in FA1 as Dillmann will race for Team France while Melker tested the Team Belgium car. Former Marussia F1 test driver, Rodolfo Gonzalez tested the car from Team Netherlands, although the Venezuelan is a likely contender for Team Venezuela.
The first race is set to begin at Algarve, Portugal at the end of April. As Malaysia previously had a rather successful campaign in the A1GP where local race-aces Alex Yoong and Fairuz Fauzy won a few races, it is unsure if the “Jalur Gemiliang” will be represented at the FA1. AF will keep you posted!
