The MG4 Gets A Major Glow-Up

MG’s popular electric hatchback, the MG4, is gearing up for a serious makeover—and this isn’t just a minor facelift. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) in China has given the green light to an all-new MG4, and it’s bringing some major changes to the table.

Size Matters: The MG4 Bulks Up

Out with the old, in with the… bigger? The updated MG4 has grown in every direction. Now stretching 4,395 mm in length, 1,842 mm in width, and 1,551 mm in height, it’s notably larger than the outgoing model.

The wheelbase gets a 45 mm boost, reaching 2,750 mm, which should translate to more cabin space and improved road presence. Compared to the previous MG4, which measured 4,287 mm long, 1,836 mm wide, and 1,516 mm tall, this upgrade is far from subtle.

A Fresh Look: A Fusion of MG’s Best Designs

MG has taken design inspiration from its latest models, including the MG3 and the sleek Cyberster roadster. The result? A sharper, sportier, and more dynamic-looking hatchback.

The front end, side panels, and rear have all been reworked, sporting a revised roofline and a wide light strip at the back. The arrow-shaped taillights, reminiscent of the Cyberster, add an extra touch of flair.

Under the Hood: A Lighter, Leaner, and More Efficient MG4

Powering the new MG4 is a 120 kW electric motor, capable of hitting a top speed of 160 km/h. Interestingly, this is slightly less powerful than the outgoing 125 kW motor, but the new model makes up for it with a lighter curb weight of 1,485 kg—a significant drop from the previous 1,641 kg. This suggests a much-improved power-to-weight ratio, likely resulting in better efficiency and overall performance.

As for the battery, MG is expected to stick with a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) unit supplied by Rept Battero Energy, though details on its exact capacity remain under wraps. The current base MG4 runs on a 51 kWh battery, so expect something similar—or possibly even better.

What About Performance Variants?

MG hasn’t spilled the beans on additional versions just yet, but if history is anything to go by, multiple trims should be on the way. In Malaysia, for instance, the current MG4 lineup includes the range-topping MG4 XPower, packing a 435 PS (320 kW) dual-motor AWD setup delivering a punchy 600 Nm of torque.

Whether a high-performance version of the new MG4 will follow suit remains to be seen.

Can the New MG4 Turn the Tide in China?

MG4 sales in China have hit a rough patch. In February, just 13 units were sold—a stark contrast to its initial hype following its mid-2022 launch. The fierce EV competition from rivals like the BYD Dolphin, Wuling Bingo, and Geely Xingyuan has made life tough for MG’s hatchback.

Outside of China, however, the MG4 is finding better traction. Malaysia has been a promising market, shifting 64 units in the first two months of 2025.

With MIIT approval secured, the updated MG4 is on the fast track to launch. The question now is: will its larger size, sharper looks, and refined powertrain be enough to reclaim its spot in the ever-growing EV battlefield? Time will tell, but this reboot certainly looks like a step in the right direction.
