BMW Teases Its Next Big EV: The All-New i3 Saloon

BMW is keeping the excitement alive in the EV world with a fresh teaser of its upcoming i3 saloon, the second model in its much-anticipated Neue Klasse lineup. The video showcases the i3 tackling icy Swedish roads in a winter testing session, giving us a first glimpse of the electric saloon in action.

The i3 will arrive after the next-gen iX3, which is set to make its official debut this year. The iX3 has already undergone its own rigorous testing, recently completing hot weather trials in South Africa.

While at first glance these two models may look similar, they cater to very different audiences—the iX3 is an SUV, while the i3 is a sleek saloon.

A Closer Look at the i3’s Design

Although both cars share BMW’s signature design language, the i3 has a distinctive front end, featuring the brand’s classic double headlights flanking a wide kidney grille. One small but notable win for traditionalists—BMW has opted for stylish side mirrors instead of digital side-view cameras. Some things are best left unchanged, right?

Overall, the i3 stays true to its concept twin, but with softer edges and more conventional sedan proportions. Unfortunately, the rear end remains heavily camouflaged, so BMW is keeping some surprises under wraps for now.

Inside the Cabin: A High-Tech Revolution

BMW hasn’t revealed any interior shots just yet, but we can make an educated guess based on the concept version. The new i3 is expected to feature BMW’s latest Panoramic iDrive system, which ditches the traditional instrument panel in favour of a pillar-to-pillar digital display.

The setup is fully customisable, with a large central screen handling all infotainment duties.

Power & Performance: What to Expect

Under the skin, the i3 will ride on BMW’s all-new Neue Klasse EV platform, designed for maximum efficiency and performance. This 800V electrical system promises 30% faster charging and 30% more range compared to current BMW EVs.

Powering the i3 is BMW’s Gen6 electric drive unit, available in:

  • Single-motor RWD for a balanced, engaging drive
  • Dual-motor AWD for extra traction and performance
  • Quad-motor M version for those craving full-blown electric insanity

When Can We Expect the i3’s Big Reveal?

With winter testing completed and real-world trials well underway, it’s safe to say that the i3’s official debut isn’t far off. BMW hasn’t confirmed a launch date yet, but given the pace of development, we could see the wraps come off sooner rather than later.

This i3 isn’t just another electric saloon—it’s shaping up to be the true all-electric successor to the legendary 3 Series. And if BMW gets it right, it could be the car that finally convinces die-hard petrolheads to make the switch to electric.
