10,000 EV Charging Stations By Year-End Says PETRA

The Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) is super committed to setting up 10,000 EV charging stations all over Malaysia by the end of this year.

This bold initiative was kicked off by the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) and is now in full swing.

Sure, they didn’t hit the mark by last year, but the target of 10,000 charging stations is still alive and kicking.

According to MVnet, there are currently 3,354 operating EV charging stations nationwide. Out of these, 2,398 are AC charging stations, and the remaining 956 are DC charging stations.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof has stressed the importance of rolling out these charging stations in both urban and rural areas to give people a solid nudge towards switching to EVs.

Fadillah, who also serves as Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, emphasized that while EV vehicles fall under MITI’s domain, PETRA has the charging stations covered.

“If we want to encourage people to use EVs, we need to make charging them convenient. Most EVs can run 300 to 400 kilometers before needing a recharge, so ramping up the number of charging stations is definitely a joint agenda for MITI and PETRA,” Fadillah said.

But wait—is 10,000 charging stations really enough for Malaysia?

With the recent surge in EV registrations, it’s looking like we might need a bit more. Last year alone, 21,789 EVs hit the road—a whopping 63% jump from 2023’s 13,301 units.

Malaysians are clearly jumping on the EV bandwagon, and if this trend keeps up, 10,000 stations might fall short of meeting the growing demand.

A report by TRP suggests that for Malaysia to have a seamless EV charging experience, we’d need about six times the current number of charging stations. Doing the math, that’s a total of 20,124 charging stations—double the current target.

In conclusion, the government has a massive task ahead to ensure there are enough charging stations to keep up with the EV boom in Malaysia. Time to step on the gas (or rather, the electric pedal) and make it happen!
