During the Uber Elevate Summit in Los Angeles last week, CEO Dara Khosrowshahi has stated that Uber’s self-driving cars will return in the coming months. Uber pulled their self-driving car tests after one of the vehicles struck a pedestrian and killed the person in March.
Thanks to the crash, Uber has decided not to reapply for a self-driving car test permit and according to DMV Deputy Director/Chief Counsel Brian Soublet, Uber would need to apply again for a new permit as well as address follow-up analysis and investigations. Uber is actively working with the National Transportation Safety Board in their investigations.
This does shine a bit of hope that Uber themselves are cleaning up on their act, unlike Tesla where Musk is constantly barraging the press and also souring their relationship with the NTSB, Uber is trying to get rid of their past transgressions by cooperating with all bodies during the investigation.
