Waymo continues to bring their self-driving minivan to other states in the US for testing. Starting from Phoenix and then also in San Francisco, Waymo is now bringing their autonomous vehicle to Atlanta.
Besides Phoenix, all of their testing of autonomous vehicles require a safety driver behind the wheel but what Waymo requires is legislation which allows them to test their fully autonomous vehicles without a safety driver. This is a better way for Waymo to keep training its AI brain.
According to an article on TechCrunch, Atlanta provides challenges such as bad traffic, extremely dense metro areas and high humidity.
A Waymo spokesperson provided the following statement to TechCrunch regarding the expansion:
