Volvo’s plan to put 100 autonomous cars has hit a snag as Volvo decides to scale down on their ambition. It isn’t anything related to regulators or participation but rather Volvo has hit a problem when it comes to laying out the wiring for all the additional gears a car requires to have autonomous driving.
Of course, that isn’t the main reason. As sensor technology continues to grow at such a rapid pace, the management team at Volvo also decided to push back testing until they get the right sensors that they need.
One way for Volvo to test is not just a technical test where companies such as Waymo has created a virtual world for their AI to drive through in that world to learn. Volvo is going towards the human-centric style of testing where they want to see the behaviour of humans especially those that will get them to spend more to purchase an autonomous car.
Volvo will be scaling down from 100 cars to 100 people who will be testing autonomous cars by 2021. At the moment there are two families who are testing the XC90.
