Why Malaysians can’t have nice things…

So I’m sure you’ve heard that within days of the MRT opening up for service a while back, some Malaysians took it upon themselves to ‘spruce-up’ the new digs to their liking, as covered by Hype.my. And that’s just one instance of several…

Launched earlier this year, O-Bike is a ride-sharing app, similar to MoBike, that’s available in Malaysia. Using a smartphone, anyone can rent a bicycle for as little as 50-sen for 30-minutes, and re-park it back to its dock when done cycling around, either for leisure or to get to work.

This service works very well in other countries, however, have a look at what’s happened here within its first year of operation (actually it hasn’t even been a full year yet)…

Facebook user Rizal Hakimm posted these photos on his page, with the message (translated from BM) “Apologies O-Bike, looks like you’re still not accepted in Malaysia, because Malaysians still live in the stone-age I think; first three photos (above & below) I took myself near the Embassy at Jalan Ampang”

In some of the other photos, it’s very clear that while some just feel the need to destroy them, others are stealing bike parts…

…while a lot seem to be ‘unclear of the concept’ and have taken the bikes home. Hey, 50-sen for a new bike, what a great deal!

So there it is. Every time something new and cool comes along, something that’s only there to make our lives better, in true form, Malaysians will destroy it.

It’s a sick mentality that’s plagued this country for as long as I can remember, and until we change that mindset, Malaysia will never be able to have nice things… – Chris Wee.
