Michael Schumacher’s Formula 1 car auctioned off at $7.5 million

Sotheby, the famed auction house, sold Michael Schumacher’s F2001 which help him win a couple of races which led to him being crowned the 2001 Formula 1 drivers champion. It was a record sale for $7.5 million for the old but rare Formula 1 car (think 1 of 1 car).

A portion of the proceeds to Schumacher’s Keep Fighting charity, whose causes include road safety and head safety. The F2001 racing car presented is the embodiment not only of Schumacher’s racing career but also the Monaco grand prix in particular, for which this was the very same car driven to victory in 2001 – a victory that Ferrari did not repeat until just this year when Sebastian Vettel won in late May.

The 2001 season was lauded by journalists and enthusiasts alike as the “golden era” of grand prix racing, most importantly because of the delicious V-10 engines mandated for use – glorious three-liter powerplants, capable of up to 900 horsepower and nearly 19,000 rpm, emitting symphonies of internal combustion the likes of which organized motorsport had never heard before, and likely may never again.

I hope the lucky owner displays the glorious car for all to see and view. As of now, Michael Schumacher is still recovering and the family has kept his rehabilitation private and refused to comment on it. Here is to hoping that you make a full recovery!
