France has taken a bold initiative to ban all petrol and diesel vehicles by 2040, as reported by The Independent.
France’s environmental minister, Nicolas Hulot, made the announcement as he unveiled a series of measures as part of newly elected President Emmanuel Macron’s plan to make the country carbon neutral by 2050.
Although the target would put pressure on France’s car manufacturers, he said that France’s industry was “well equipped” to effectively eliminate the use of fossil fuel cars in France.
Hulot said “the government will offer each French person a bonus to replace their diesel car dating before 1997 or petrol from before 2001 by a new or second-hand vehicle.” However, he hasn’t yet specified the exact amount of this incentive or other details about it but the move should help to encourage citizens to upgrade their vehicle to a more environmental-friendly vehicle.
