“Older cars are built like tanks, cars today are too fragile“. How often have you heard this? Well, to celebrate its 50th Anniversary, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) decided to crash test two cars that are exactly 50-years apart; a 2009 Chevy Malibu and a 1959 Chevy Bel Air, and the results are shocking!
Thanks to advancements in modern-day passive safety systems like airbags, as well as impact-absorption materials, crumple-zones and high-tensile steel where required, cars have indeed gotten a lot safer. Obviously both cars are write-offs, but at least the driver in the Malibu isn’t a write-off either!
