PAL-V a flying car which has gone commercial

A Dutch company called PAL-V has started selling flying cars earlier this year. They offer two models, the Liberty Pioneer and the Liberty Sport. Compared to other flying cars which are either in prototype or design concept, the good folks at PAL-V has started jumping the gun ahead of others.

“After years of hard work, beating the technical and qualification challenges, our team succeeded in creating an innovative flying car that complies with existing safety standards, determined by regulatory bodies around the world,” says Robert Dingemanse, CEO of PAL-V

One might say that this is just a helicopter which can move on the road but PAL-V claims that in car mode, it can reach up to 170kmh. What is weird is that it runs on 3 wheels. So cue the reliant robin jokes as I am puzzled how it will maintain stability on the ground.

“Later in 2017, we will start building a preproduction series followed by the manufacturing of the first PAL-V Liberty’s for our early ‘pioneer’ clients. Deliveries of road and air certificated models are scheduled by the end of 2018. This truly is a pivotal time in aviation and mobility history” adds Dingemanse.

Don’t think that with your normal driving license you can start flying one of these things. You definitely need to get a pilots license as well in order to operate the PAL-V in flight mode.

The expected price for the PAL-V Liberty Pioneer Edition is around USD$600,000 whilst the cheaper PAL-V Sports Edition is expected to be sold at USD$400,000. The PAL-V Liberty Pioneer Edition comes “full option”, including a unique interior and exterior finishing. It has a level of personalization reserved for Pioneer Edition owners only. The PAL-V Liberty Sport is the standard version of the PAL-V Liberty.
