Whilst in the midst of a legal battle with Uber over autonomous car technology, Waymo, the self-driving car technology company under the holding company of Alphabet (which also owns Google) is working on their own autonomous trucks.
In a statement to Reuters, a Waymo spokesperson said this, “We’re taking our eight years of experience in building self-driving hardware and software and conducting a technical exploration into how our technology can integrate into a truck.”
All this amidst a legal tussle with Uber where the source of the issue came from ex-employee of Waymo, Anthony Levandowski, who was accused of stealing more than 14,000 files of Waymo’s self-driving technology. Levandowski went on to start up his own self-driving technology firm focusing on trucks called Otto which Uber acquired.
We saw what autonomous trucks would look like in the recent movie, Logan, which depicted a future where trucks hauling cargo over long distances would be fully automated.
