You hear a lot about V6, V8, V10 and many more of these V engines and sometimes associate them with certain cars like how the inline straight 6 is synonymous with BMW’s. For Audi, V engines have been around for 29 years. Starting from the 3.6L 8-cylinder in 1988 and then followed by the 2.8L V6 in 1990, the V engine has been used in both petrol and diesel variants for Audi.
Audi introduced the first V6 TDI engine and then the V8 TDI which had a 3.3L displacement. This is then followed with a V6 biturbo with a 2.7L displacement in 2000. The 2.7L V6 biturbo produced 380hp and 440Nm of torque which powered the Audi RS4 Avant.
These days, the V6 and V8 are used across the Audi range from the A4, A5, A6, A6, Q5 and Q7 series. Both in petrol and diesel forms, they normally operate with a displacement of 3.0L and 4.0L for the V8 engines. Power output from these engines ranges from 218hp to 605hp.
Their new 2.9L V6 engine in the Audi RS5 is a unique beast. Because of the power increase of the new V6, Audi had to reduce the displacement by 0.1L just to reduce the stress on the engine.
