Comparison Between BMW 5 Series F10 Versus G30 [+video]

BMW 5 Series

At a first glance, you’d be tempted to say the BMW 5 Series G30 is more less a facelift of the F10, but upon closer inspection, you’ll notice that there’s plenty of styling changes applied both inside and out.

To illustrate, BMW has released a short video that showcases the 6th and 7th generation side by side, so you can compare the exterior design (front and rear) in day and night, the interior design and the displays.

Among the changes found on the exterior includes some changes on the light graphics of the headlights. Moreover, the glass headlight covers now connect seamlessly with the kidney grille.

For better aerodynamics whilst also reducing the drag coefficient of the new BMW 5 Series sedan by 10% to Cd = 0.22 compared to its predecessor, the new BMW 5 Series now come with active air flap control for the radiator. This system opens the louvres in the kidney grille elements and lower air intakes when more cooling air is required, but otherwise keeps them closed to optimise aerodynamic efficiency.

Moving to the back, the rear lights reach deep into the sides of the car, creating a visual connection between its flanks and rear end. Cutting-edge LED bars enable a slim interpretation of the hallmark BMW “L” shape and underline the width of the new sedan.

Inside the cabin, the most noticeable changes found in the new BMW 5 Series is the digital instrument cluster and the freestanding iDrive infotainment system that now comes with a larger 10.25-inch screen. To interact with the system, the driver can operate it using the iDrive Controller, by voice command or gestures, or by touching the display controls.

Due to its minor increase in its overall vehicle dimension – 36 mm longer, 6 mm wider, and 2 mm taller, while the wheelbase has been stretched by 7 mm – the new 5 is roomier by providing additional space for rear passengers as well as easier access into the cabin thanks to the revised design of the door cutouts.
