A couple of hours ago, Toyota has just pulled the wraps off the newest update to the most popular model in the United States, the all-new Camry. The company shifted 388,618 units of the Camry in 2016 alone.
Now in its eighth-generation, the all-new 2018 Camry is now underpinned by Toyota’s latest TNGA platform. Wheelbase of the new Camry is now 50.8 mm longer than its predecessor, and coupled with the lowered roof and hood, the new Camry boasts a lower centre of gravity. Driver seating position has also been lowered.
Toyota is offering three new powertrains on the new 2018 Camry, including a new 3.5-litre V6, new 2.5-litre inline-four mated to an equally new 8-speed Direct-Shift automatic transmission (8AT) and a next-generation Toyota Hybrid System (THS II).
Holding the whole car together is a high strength body that utilizes ultra high tensile steel and new molding technology. Other highlights include a new double wishbone rear suspension and four-point engine mounting system, with the latter aimed at reducing unwanted NVH from entering the cabin.
Visually, Toyota has grafted onto the Camry its “Keen Look” design language, prominently featuring a two-piece grille with flowing thin and thick treatments. The hybrid model gets a blue highlight emblem. As before, Toyota will be offering four grades of the Camry, LE, XLE, SE and XSE. The sporty SE and XSE variants will receive bespoke body style compared to the regular LE and XLE variants with a sculpted rocker panel, new 19-inch alloy wheels (XSE only), subtle rear spoiler lip, aggressive front bumper and rear bumper with an integrated diffuser.
Safety is not compromised on the 2018 Camry, with all models fitted with Toyota Safety Sense P (TSS-P) as standard. This includes Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection (PCS w/PD), Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC), Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist (LDA w/SA); and Automatic High Beams (AHB). Select models will also come with standard Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) with Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA).
On top of the active safety features, all Camry models also get 10 airbags as standard with Toyota’s Star Safety System, which encompasses Enhanced Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control, Electronic Brake-force Distribution, Brake Assist, Anti-lock Braking System, and Smart Stop Technology. A reverse camera is also standard on all Camry models.
Toyota will assemble the 2018 Camry at the Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Kentucky (TMMK) in Georgetown, Kentucky. Expect the 2018 Camry to arrive to dealers in late summer 2017.
