Mazda is considering to revive its MPS performance line of models, which was discontinued when the current 3 debut.
The company made it clear that a hotter variant of the current 3 won’t be made, but we can see that Mazda is reconsidering that decision as the hot hatch market is very much alive.
With that being said, the Hiroshima-based company could pull the trigger on a hotter Mazda MX5, which could be called MPS or Mazdaspeed, depending on where its sold. Folks in North America would likely receive a Mazdaspeed variant, while the MX5 could receive the MPS moniker elsewhere, including Malaysia (if it launches here).
Back in 2014, Mazda toyed with the idea of an Mazda 3 MPS with AWD, motivated by SkyActiv-G 2.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine. This did not see the light of day, as the company focused instead on the MX5.
From what we understood, Mazda is currently developing their next-generation of SkyActiv engine, effectively putting development of MPS models in the back burner.
