Effective December 2016, B10 biodiesel is expected to replace the B7 blend at petrol stations. B7 won’t be gone, as it will be introduced to the industrial sector.
According to a report by NST, Malaysian Biodiesel Association (MBA) boss U.R Unnithan said that its members were informed by the government that 1 December is the date that B10 biodiesel will be implemented.
“We welcome this announcement. Our members are ready and committed to meet the government’s biodiesel mandate in terms of quality, quantity and good service,” he told NST.
He added, “Apart from the B7 mandate going up to B10 on December 1, the industrial sector, which all this while is using only regular diesel will, starting December 1, use B7.”
NST also added that petrol stations that currently sells Euro 5 diesel are exempted from carrying the B10 blend, but will be required to sell the B7 blend.
B10 biodiesel carries a 10 percent blend of palm methyl ester (PME) with 90 percent of diesel. B7 biodiesel carries 7 percent PME.
By introducing the B10 blend, MBA added that this move would need 709,000 tonnes of palm oil to be turned into PME. The move is said to lower the country’s total palm oil stock and support the palm oil prices internationally.
For diesel vehicle owners, they should be wary of B10 biodiesel, as the move could potentially void their engines’ warranty, as noted by Motorme.my. Instead, they can opt to refuel their vehicles with Euro 5 diesel, which is currently set at B7.
