Having sampled a pre-production model in Japan almost a year ago, it seemed rather strange that Honda Malaysia has yet to bring in the Honda BR-V.

Honda has officially launched the budget MPV in Indonesia, Thailand and India following the initial preview in Japan. Thanks to some insider source, it is very likely that we can expect the new Honda BR-V as soon as Q1 2017.

The Honda BR-V sits on an elongated Honda Brio platform, a model that isn’t sold here. In terms of dimensions, the BR-V comes in at 4,455 mm x 1,735 mm x 1,650 mm, with a wheelbase of 2,600 mm. The closest rival for the Honda BR-V is the newly-launched Toyota Sienta. The Sienta may be shorter (4,235 mm) and narrower (1,695 mm), but it is taller at 1,695 mm and boasts a longer wheelbase with 2,750 mm.

Like the Sienta, the Honda BR-V is expected to arrive with a naturally-aspirated 1.5-litre i-VTEC four-cylinder petrol engine mated to a Earth Dreams Technology CVT. In other markets, the Honda BR-V can be had with a i-DTEC diesel paired to a five-speed manual box. This combination is unlikely to debut here. On top of that, the Honda BR-V is likely going to feature ABS, EBD and VSA across the range, though airbag count is possibly fixed at just 2.

With that being said, the Honda BR-V could see a retail price of between RM85,000 to RM95,000, potentially undercutting the Sienta. Word has it that the new Honda BR-V will make a local debut after Chinese New Year in January.
