BAIC Motor Group has been given the green light from the Daimler group to utilize Mercedes-Benz’s E-Class platform.

According to a report by Autonews Europe, BAIC’s first vehicle to benefit from the E-Class’s platform will be a midsize sedan that will be launched in China in 2018, followed by an SUV and MPV. The report by Internet Info Agency did not mention which E-Class platform would be used.

Furthermore, these BAIC-built vehicles will get its powertrain from BAIC’s shared production plant with Daimler in Beijing. Engine choices include a 1.8-litre turbocharged petrol engine and a 3.0-litre naturally-aspirated engine, mated to a six-speed automatic.

The Beijing-based BAIC produces vehicles under its own brand and under the Senova brand. Furthermore, BAIC also produces microvans using the Weiwang brand.

2016 has been a good year for BAIC, as the company has sold 232,000 light vehicles in the first seven months. This marks an increase of 43 percent compared to the same period last year.
