Since 2010, Porsche has doubled its workforce by employing 26,200 people at the end of June 2016. As the company prepares for the Mission E, which will go into production in Zuffenhausen at the end of the decade, Porsche is now getting ready to expand its workforce by hiring more than 1,400 new employees in the Stuttgart area to work on the development and production of its first all-electric sports car.
In addition to the 1,400 new jobs, Porsche is also seek to hire 100 new employees as IT specialists and to offer 50 jobs to creative individuals in order to integrate the latest technologies into mobility solutions for the premium vehicle segment. On top of that, Porsche will increase apprentice numbers from 150 to 220.
The demand for these jobs are high as the company receives more than 140,000 job applications each year and 7,500 of them alone are for the 220 apprenticeship positions offered. Hence, additional knowledge, as well as a certain number of employees who approach things in a novel way, are needed for the development of the new Mission E model.
Porsche offers challenging assignments and a modern working environment in order to attract the most talented individuals. Various programmes such as those for ensuring the compatibility of profession and family life are designed to further the company’s attractiveness as an employer.
“One can in fact describe what is going on now as a ‘war for talents'”, says Andreas Haffner, Member of the Executive Board for Human Resources and Social Affairs at Porsche AG. “We are in direct competition with other automakers and suppliers and IT firms in our global search for talented experts. Money alone is not enough to attract these creative minds. You also need to offer exciting challenges, an inspiring environment, the greatest possible freedom to create and, now more than ever, attractive programmes for the work-life balance. However, with the hiring of more than 1,500 college graduates over the last five years, we have shown that we can offer secure jobs with attractive career opportunities.”
As for the Mission E, the production version will retain most of the concept’s design and specifications. It will enter production in 2020 with a newly developed pure electric powertrain developing 600 horsepower. Porsche said the concept can sprint from 0-100 kmh in just 3.5 seconds, and will have enough battery juice to last for more than 500 kilometers on pure electric drive.
Charged via an 800-volt charger unit specially developed for the car, the lithium-ion batteries integrated within the vehicle floor have enough power again for 80% of the range after just 15 minutes. The vehicle can optionally be ‘refuelled’ wirelessly by induction via a coil set into the garage floor.
With plenty of power, adequate range, and a stunning design, the Mission E has all the right ingredients to become another hit for Porsche and go head to head with Tesla’s Model S.
