Volkswagen Brings Update to the Scirocco!

In Malaysia, Volkswagen initially sold the Scirocco in two variants, the 1.4 TSI model (which has a twincharged engine) and the 2.0 TSI model (a single turbo charged 2.0 EA888 engine). Then came along the Scirocco R which also had a 2.0 turbo charged engine but it was based off the older EA113 engine which produced more than 250bhp. Ever since the Scirocco R was launched here in Malaysia, the 2.0 TSI variant was pulled out and now only the 1.4 and R models are sold.

Volkswagen is set to launch the 2014 Scirocco at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show and Autofreaks has the news on what we should be expecting.

So what sort of updates are we getting in the new Scirocco? Well I would say that the update comes in the form of exterior, interior and engine changes. So let’s start with the exterior of the car. As you can see in the image above, the few things that are different would be the front bumper. It follows the styling cue of the current Golf GTI Mk7 model where it showcases the blades at the front to cut through the air. Air intake ducts are now larger and with keeping with the Scirocco tradition, the VW logo still sits on the hood of the car.

Still focusing on the front, other subtle changes include newly design headlamps, signal lamps, daytime running lights and fog lamps. All these are separated by the blades.

At the rear we see a new rear bumper, a little squarish but complements the car ever so nicely and coupled with that are new rear LED lamps. The Golf has always been getting really nice and sexy styled lights and finally we can see the Scirocco following suit.

Also introduced are a new set of rims, the 17-inch Shanghai rims and the 18-inch “Lisbon” and “Salvador” rims. A lot of manufacturers I would say have very boring stock rims but Volkswagen is really putting an effort in designing beautiful rims.

The Scirocco R as well gets an updated look with newly designed front and rear bumpers and newly designed “Talladega” rims. The new rims come in both sets, 18-inch and 19-inch and is named “Cadiz”. Let’s take a look at the interior.

What you will get is the new steering wheel which is currently used in the Mk7 Golf, a new instrument cluster with new improvements over the older ones, the creme de la creme, an instrument panel cluster sitting on top showing the charge pressure, chronometer and engine oil temperature.

This is something you might normally find in the car’s MFD or other additional accessories which car enthusiast buy (me included), but Volkswagen did this in tribute of the first Scirocco they designed which had this. The first Scirocco you might say? Think about the scene in the latest Karate Kid movie where Jackie Chan was cleaning and polishing the car and then later destroying it with a hammer. That was the first Scirocco Mk1.

The Scirocco R will still get their standard semi bucket seats but looking close at the instrument cluster will show the key difference in the R series which is the hint of blue splashed across the instrument panels.

Petrol engines have power outputs of between 125 PS and 280 PS. The performance range of the four TSI (turbo direct fuel injection engines) extends from 92 kW / 125 PS via 132 kW / 180 PS and 162 kW / 220 PS up to the new 206 kW / 280 PS powered exceptional engine of the Scirocco R. The 1.4 TSI with 125 PS is used for the first time by Volkswagen; the Scirocco base engine consumes 1.0 litres less per 100 km than its predecessor. Also, the 180 PS powered 2.0 TSI is new in the coupé line-up, following the 1.4 TSI with 118 kW / 160 PS in Europe. Although the new engine develops an additional 20 PS, it is some 0.6 litres per 100 km more economical than the 160 PS version. The adapted 2.0 TSI from the Golf GTI with 220 PS is also new in the coupé; a reduction in consumption of 1.4 litres per 100 km compared to its predecessor or 19 per cent.

  • 1.4 TSI: 92 kW / 125 PS (+ 3 PS); 5.4 l/100 km / 125 g/km CO2.
  • 2.0 TSI: 132 kW / 180 PS (+ 20 PS); 6.0 l/100 km / 139 g/km CO2. (This range replaces the 160ps 1.4 twin charged variant in the older models)
  • 2.0 TSI: 162 kW / 220 PS (+ 10 PS); 6.0 l/100 km / 139 g/km CO2.
  • 2.0 TSI: 206 kW / 280 PS (+ 15 PS); 8.0 l/100 km / 187 g/km CO2. (Some say that this new engine is based of the EA888 variant instead of the EA113)
  • 2.0 TDI: 110 kW / 150 PS (+ 10 PS); 4.1 l/100 km / 107 g/km CO2.
  • 2.0 TDI: 135 kW / 184 PS (+ 7 PS); 4.3 l/100 km / 111 g/km CO2.

If Malaysia sticks to it’s marketing strategy and also based on our tax structure, it may follow in terms of how the previous version was launched. A 1.4 TSI  (125ps) and a 2.0 TSI (220ps) variant and then later by a Scirocco R variant and slowly phasing out the 2.0 TSI variant.

In conclusion, the 2014 Scirocco is more of an extended facelift because the fundamentals of the car hasn’t been changed yet to the new MQB system which I think Volkswagen is developing for the next generation Scirocco. The extent of this facelift did borrow a lot of cues from the Golf range but boy oh boy, I am just drooling over this car now, especially the Scirocco R. But in all honesty, if you aren’t a fan of the Scirocco, these subtle facelifted features may be hard to spot.
