Dubbed as the ‘most intelligent luxury sedan’, Mercedes-Benz’s next generation E-Class was officially launched in Malaysia today during a press event at St Regis Kuala Lumpur.
The new E-Class marks the world premiere of numerous technical innovations whilst at the same time, delivers stylish highlights with its distinct, emotive design and high-grade interior.
Compared with its predecessor, its wheelbase length has grown by 65 millimetres, while its overall length has been stretched by 43 millimetres. The resulting increase in space is to the benefit of all passengers. The basis for agile handling characteristics is provided by an increased track width (extra 20 millimetres at the front, extra 7 millimetres at the rear). Meanwhile, the boot capacity has been maintained as with the previous model it replaces.
In terms of its overall looks, the front end of the E-Class has been restyled, boasting a different look for each design and equipment line. The base version features the classic Mercedes radiator grille with the star on the bonnet, as does the EXCLUSIVE line – albeit in an even more elaborate fashion. The AVANTGARDE and AMG Line models are identifiable by the sports radiator grille with a large Mercedes star as its centrepiece.
At the rear end, the new E-Class adopts a new design for the lights. Optionally, the rear lights comes with an additional highlight reminiscent of stardust, the Milky Way or the glow of a jet engine. This “stardust effect” is created by reflector technology with a specially configured surface structure for the tail lights and is making its debut on the new E-Class.
The interior of the new E-Class now includes two new high-resolution displays, each with a wide screen diagonal of 12.3 inches. As the instrument cluster, this wide-screen cockpit contains a large display with virtual instruments in the direct field of vision of the driver as well as a central display above the centre console. The driver can choose between three different styles to select their preferred design for the wide-screen instrument cluster; “Classic”, “Sport” and “Progressive”.
In addition, the new E-Class now comes with touch-sensitive control buttons on the steering wheel. Like a smartphone interface, they respond precisely to horizontal and vertical swiping movements, allowing the driver to control the entire infotainment system using finger swipes without having to take their hands off the steering wheel.
Further controls for the infotainment system are provided in the shape of a touchpad with controller in the centre console, which can even recognise handwriting, and the Linguatronic voice control system. There are also direct-access buttons for controlling functions such as the air-conditioning system or to activate/deactivate certain driver assistance systems.
The E-Class comes with an interior lighting that makes exclusive use of durable, energy-saving LED technology. With 64 colours, it offers a host of possibilities for personalisation. It adds touches of light, for example, to the trim parts, central display, front stowage facility on the centre console, handle recesses, door pockets, front and rear footwells, overhead console, and tweeters (if the vehicle is equipped with the Burmester high-end 3D surround sound system).
At launch, the new E-Class comes with a range of petrol engines comprise 4-cylinder versions with outputs ranging from 184hp to 245 hp. The E 200 model which is currently on sale in Malaysia is the four-cylinder petrol engine rated at 184hp with 300Nm of torque. Further model variants will be added to the range including the E 250 rated at 211hp with a torque of 350Nm will arrive in September this year, while the E 300 rated at 245hp with a torque of 370Nm is expected to arrive sometime in November 2016.
All models available at market launch are equipped with the new 9G-TRONIC 9-speed automatic transmission and includes the ECO start/stop function.
All E-Class variants also come with AGILITY CONTROL suspension with selective damping system and lowering to ensure a well-balanced ride comfort on any road surface.
A DYNAMIC SELECT switch in the cockpit enables the driver to select from four modes which includes, ‘Comfort’, ‘ECO’, ‘Sport’ and ‘Sport +’. The additional ‘Individual’ option allows drivers to configure their vehicle to suit their own preferences.
When it comes to safety, Mercedes-Benz’s new assistance and safety systems enhance safety, comfort and driver assistance to new levels. This includes intelligent systems such as Active Brake Assist, Attention Assist and Crosswind Assist that comes as standard feature in this sedan. Furthermore, the range of features in the new E-Class includes, PRE-SAFE impulse side, Parking Pilot, PRE-SAFE Sound as well as High-resolution MULTIBEAM LED headlamps.
