Nissan rejects claims of emission cheating in South Korea

Nissan may have bought a majority stake in Mitsubishi, but it appears that the company could be caught in a new emission cheating scandal in South Korea.

According to Autoblog, Nissan has denied claims by the South Korean environment department that the Nissan Qashqai allegedly has emission cheating device fitted. The South Korean ministry is looking to fine Nissan 330 million won ( $280,000).

Officials at the South Korean environment department claimed they tested the latest generation Nissan Qashqai with Euro 6 emission standards. They claimed that Nissan has fitted a device that turns the exhaust reduction system off under normal driving.

Nissan has denied such claims, adding that authorities in the European Union did not find such cheating devices fitted to their vehicles.

Apart from the large fine, the environment department will order a recall for 814 units of the Sunderland-built Nissan Qashqais. Nissan has 100 days to dispute these charges.

“Nissan has not and does not employ illegal defeat or cheat devices in any of the cars that we make. Following stringent testing and using similar standards to the Korean tests, EU authorities have concluded that Nissan vehicles they tested used no illegal defeat device,” said Nissan in a statement.
