Tesla recently launched its refreshed Model S, dropping the base 70D model in favour of the 75D model. Fret not if you have a 70D model, as Tesla is offering an Over-the-air (OTA) update for your 70D! No, really.

Despite being labeled as a 70D, Tesla has in fact fitted a 75 kWh battery into the 70D, and you can pay Tesla to unlock more range out of it. Tesla will send an OTA update to the car to unlock an additional 31 km of range, bringing the 70D’s range to 407 km.

Despite that, customers who purchase a Tesla Model S 70D between 11 April and 5 May are entitled to a free update. In addition to that, the electric car giant will also replace the 70D emblem with a 75D emblem, free of charge.

As Tesla told TheVerge, “All 70 kWh Model S with updated styling have been built with a 75 kWh battery pack and the additional energy can be unlocked at anytime through an over-the-air software update. We will continue to offer the 70 kWh energy option at but we will no longer produce the packs; a decision that is the most efficient for Tesla and the most beneficial for our customers.

Some time back, the older Tesla Model S 40 kWh was actually fitted with a 60 kWh battery, and Tesla asked for $8,500 to unlock the additional 20 kWh.
