According to a report in The Star, SAIC Motor Corp Ltd will be taking a 49% stake in Weststar Maxus Sdn Bhd, which could mean that MG Cars could return to Malaysia through Weststar Maxus. It has been more than ten years since MG was sold in Malaysia.

SAIC Motor Corp currently has joint venture agreements with CP Group in Thailand to assemble MG vehicles there, and they have a JV in Indonesia with Indonesia. The 49% stake in Weststar Maxus is worth RM1 billion, and could see them setting up an assembly plant here for MG vehicles.

MG Cars was bought over by SAIC Motr Corp back in 2006, and the first model launched was the MG6. It is worth noting that despite MG’s British background, it is now fully Chinese.

We did take a closer look at several MG models during the 2015 Bangkok International Motor Show, and reported that they were in talks with Federal Auto for CKD operations. The memorandum of understanding was signed way back in April 2013 and nothing has progressed since then, and it is safe to say that the deal with Federal Auto has not succeeded.
